The Empty Man is a supernatural horror film filled with action, suspense and sheer terror! After teenagers from a small Midwestern town begin to mysteriously vanish, the locals begin to suspect that their disappearances may somehow be tied to a terrifying local legend. Thrust out of retirement, James Lasombra (James Badge Dale), a troubled former cop still reeling from the deaths of his own wife and son, begins to investigate the events that have shaken this community. Things take a bizarre turn when Lasombra discovers a secretive group of occultists who seem to be attempting to bring forth a horrific, mystical entity. Before long, Lasombra realizes that his life — and the lives of those close to him — are in terrible danger in this white-knuckle chiller. The Empty Man also stars Marin Ireland, Stephen Root, Ron Canada, Robert Aramayo, Joel Courtney and Sasha Frolova. Directed by David Prior from his screen story and screenplay based on Cullen Bunn’s novel.

  • Too Long

Good decent story, however wayyyy too long for its own good
  • Too long and no cohesion whatsoever

The overall plot of this movie never really comes together. What’s it about? A mythological Tibetan monster? A doomsday cult? The fragility of human morality? The subjective nature of reality? Who knows? I don’t think the film’s creators even know. For over two hours the film wanders aimlessly from one underdeveloped subplot to the next. When it finally, mercilessly, does come to an end, few of the subplots are ever resolved.

It was pretty good until it wasn’t. Creepy, moody but falls flat towards the end.
  • Hard to get through

  • Great Film

For the price it’s a great film. Why pay more for those other flashy “horror” films when there’s a good one right here.

I had no idea what to expect from this movie but I really like James Badge Dale as an actor so I gave it a shot. This movie is absolutely fantastic. If you aren’t hooked after the first 25 minutes of the movie, then I will eat my shoe. This is a beautifully shot, edited, acted and directed movie with a very original premise that takes you in directions you do not see coming. I was curious as to whether a horror movie could hold up to an over two hour runtime and it earns your attention from beginning to end. The production design and sound design of the film alone deserves to be nominated for Oscars. The entity of the title is frightening and unlike anything seen on screen in this genre before and the director, David Prior deserves a big career after this film. I loved this movie and as a lifelong horror fan I cannot recommend it highly enough...
  • Oh my that was slow

I’ve never written a review about a movie, but this was so slow and boring I can’t help but feel obligated to save someone 2 hours of their life, don’t waste your time and if you do just know I warned you
  • Candyman knockoff

Candyman Knockoff, not original at all.
  • What it appears to be and not.

At its base it appears to be just another schlock horror, and in a way it is. However it’s execution is a bit different. I was impressed they actually spent time to set up a background with a significant amount of time before the title card. What it really is at its core is a supernatural mystery. A nice schlocky supernatural mystery. Sometimes that’s just enough with good execution. Well worth the rent.
